BOOK REVIEW: "TWISTED ROADS" (Kręte Drogi)

"In this extraordinary three-volume novel titled 'Twisted Roads' (Kręte drogi), one can discover deep historical truths while following the captivating destiny of Michał—a boy found in the wild steppes, raised by a Polish nobleman, whose fierce devotion in service to the Commonwealth wins him honors and acclaim from the high nobility, and most notably, from King John II Casimir. The destiny of the nation intertwines seamlessly with love and valor; this was undoubtedly a turning point in Polish history, an era where such dramatic fates were common.
Thanks to the author's courtesy, I approached Henryk Longin Rogowski's historical novel with particular interest. The book delves into the most challenging times in the nation's history. The author describes the struggles of Polish warriors against the Tatars, Chmielnicki's Cossacks, and ultimately the Swedes, with extraordinary intrigue and immense visual power. Rogowski has consciously challenged Sienkiewicz’s legendary Trilogy—and I dare say, he has done so with great success.
Rogowski’s work is not merely a brilliantly readable novel. Above all, it is an exceptionally accurate and fascinating chronicle of a unique era, capturing the vices and internal feuds of the nobility, as well as the protagonist's profound love for Anna, a girl of noble birth. The lightness of the author’s pen is astonishing; his battle scenes are remarkably vivid, and his descriptions of the beautiful Polish lands—invaded and pillaged during those times—are breathtaking. A weakened nation, plagued by disease and decades of struggle against the Tatar hordes and Cossacks, rises to face the Swedish Deluge. Here again, the author’s depictions of these multi-year struggles are magnificent. Rogowski masterfully illustrates the themes of patriotism and national consciousness, especially evident during the reign of King John II Casimir.
The sheer cruelty of the invaders against the defenseless population ultimately united the majority of Poles against the enemy. This was precisely the moment when a unique type of patriotism was born—one that provided a fighting chance for survival and ultimate victory. The incredibly vivid descriptions and engaging plotlines, including the powerful romance, constitute the true value of this book.
I highly recommend this book, and I strongly encourage publishers and producers to consider it. It is a novel written with grand scale and immense talent, carrying a profound awareness of transmitting historical values, particularly to younger generations.
For admirers of Sienkiewicz, 'Twisted Roads' will be an absolute delicacy.
One might label Rogowski an epigone of the classics. However, such a charge is highly ambiguous; if someone were to call me an epigone of Bolesław Prus, I would take it as a grand compliment. And a grand compliment is precisely what Rogowski deserves. Perhaps even more than a compliment."
